In addition to the titles reviewed, this series includes a wide range of topics from the science world. Each volume goes into depth about each topic, and includes a timeline at the beginning of each volume, explaining the people behind each theory or scientific law, as well as their contribution to such. Each volume has color photographs and illustrations throughout; while not many in number, their inclusion is helpful for the reader to better understand the information presented. Each chapter also has source notes, which appear at the end of the book. There are further research listings for those who need more information about a particular topic, as well as for those who are looking for additional sources. An index is included within each volume, but aside from a glossary of “Important People in the History of…”, there is no additional information about unfamiliar words. Scientific words, as well as possibly unfamiliar words, are scattered throughout each chapter, within each volume, in a highlighted area, of random pages for students.
One note that bears mentioning is that picture credits appear at the end of The Importance of the Laws of MotionM, as well as information about the author. Students who are researching various theories, as well as particular areas in the scientific world, will benefit greatly from the use of each of the titles, even if only as jumping-off points.

Far more than just explaining the science involved in six important scientific theories, these volumes cover their history, discovery, and development. The reader learns what ancient people thought, how and why that thinking changed, who the important people were, and the impact these changes in knowledge have had on cultures and countries over time. The reading level of these volumes is high. They are illustrated, though some illustrations are more decorative than informational. Important words and their definitions are highlighted by Words in Context boxes. Each volume includes chapter source notes, a list of important people, and suggestions for further research. Gr 8 Up Tracing the evolution of six theories from their origins until present day, this well-researched series is packed with information that offers students a better understanding of the nature of science. Rich historical examples from key figures, many accompanied by quotes, illustrate the thinking behind the science while demonstrating the impact on both the discipline and society. Text-heavy, the books contain minimal images, but the ones that are present do their job well by illustrating, supporting, and making clear the material around them. Bright red “Words in Context” sidebars bring the glossary to the reader, flanking the text in which the vocabulary appears; unlike in similar titles, the in-text word does not appear in bold print. Source notes and a list of important people in the history of their fields are provided near the back of each volume, offering a wealth of resources should students choose to pursue further research. VERDICT A first-purchase consideration.
