This entry from the Cutting Edge Technology series is a detailed look at the advances that are being made in the designs of planes, trains, and automobiles, not to mention marine vehicles and spacecraft. First, a visual time line gives readers a look back at the progress that has been made in transportation history, starting in 3,500 BCE with the invention of the wheel. The book then goes on to discuss both individual vehicles like electric and hybrid cars, high-speed trains, drones, and China’s elevated buses, as well as the innovations and general progress being made in the transportation areas. Attention is also paid to the topics of pollution and emissions, making for a well-rounded picture. The material is interesting and solidly presented, though it will perhaps be the reader already interested in the subject who will get the most out of it. More photos would have been welcome, but those present are pertinent, and the book has a clean design. A good resource for reports, and a smart offering for future engineers.

Gr 9 Up-With its fact-filled, evenhanded analyses of state-of-the-art technologies, these well-written titles covers a wide range of appealing innovations that readers will find of interest, especially such lesser publicized topics as entertainment and Internet technology. Before examining present-day applications and considering future developments, each entry begins with a visual time line highlighting the subject’s significant advancements, providing a frame of reference for students going forward. The dense text is immensely readable despite the intimidating volume of it per page, while the content itself is filled with enough broad information and specific details to maintain reader interest, such as the development of 4-D televisions complete with the ability to stimulate senses other than sight. The few photographs keep the focus on the material. The lack of a glossary is not an inconvenience as the language is clear and concise; unfamiliar terms are defined via adjacent sidebars, rendering the word list unnecessary.
VERDICT Intriguing information and thorough research make this series an outstanding choice for most library collections.

Each of these titles begins with an infographic that illustrates innovations in the field over time. The five chapters are well written in a clear concise manner. Terms are defined in boxes next to the text in which the term is used. In highlighting the newest technologies, the authors explain innovations that are either currently available or in testing for the last five to six years (including 2016). The photographs are colorful and serve to illustrate new technologies with which readers might not be familiar. Due to the swiftly evolving nature of technology, these titles could become outdated quickly. Readers interested in technology would find pleasure in browsing through these titles, but the books could also be useful to students conducting research for a class assignment. Index. Websites.
