Gr 5 Up These books explore the impact of technology and how it has revolutionized traditional fields. In Medical Technology, biomedical engineers create artificial ears using 3-D bioprinters, and in Gaming, it is noted that Pokémon Go was designed to get gamers out of the house and interacting with the world around them. Eight jobs are profiled per title, and the seven-page entries contain new developments, areas of study, working conditions, education and training, outlook, and opportunities for advancement—headings also used in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). Not surprisingly, demand for these careers is exceptionally high. An interview, a listing of related jobs obtained from the OOH, and other appended resources will help students pursue their career goals.
VERDICT: There are few visuals, but the lengthy narratives are well outlined and fact-filled for high school career inquiry. Consider for serious readers.

The High-Tech Careers series features five titles so far: Careers in Environmental and Energy Technology, Careers in Gaming, Careers in Internet Technology, Careers in Medical Technology and Careers in Robotics. The three reviewed volumes follow the same format and provide well-researched information. Each title includes several careers, each broken into these sections: “What Does A … Do?”, “How Do You Become A …?”, “On The Job,” “What Is The Future Outlook For…?”, “Find Out More”, and an “At A Glance” box. The job description section begins each career thumbnail and provides a two-page job summary including an insight about the job from a professional working in that field. In the “At A Glance” boxes, readers will find a salary range, job statistics from 2014, basic job requirements, working conditions, and more. “How Do You Become A…?” focuses on the basic and preferred education, certification and licensing, opportunities for pre-job volunteering and internships, as well as the skills and personality traits that are important for that profession. Career profiles in “On The Job” include the number of job openings in this career in the United States, whether most of the jobs are full or part time, the salary range, and opportunities for advancement. The profile then turns to a projection of what the future holds for this profession. Each profile concludes with a list of annotated websites and organizational listings specific to each field. All books feature a question-and-answer spread with a professional that includes career advice as well as what s/he least and most likes about the job.
Medical Technology tackles standard jobs, like medical research scientist and radiation therapist, as well as jobs in the forefront of new technologies, like biomedical engineer and biomatician. Careers in Gaming focuses on the insurgence of STEAM technology and the expanding field of gaming for educational learning. Careers in Internet Technology covers traditional jobs, such as web developer and database administrator and then moves into new jobs like social media specialist and cyber security analyst.
The series overall would be a great resource for those interested in pursuing high-tech careers. It provides a wealth of practical information in several fields.
