Booklist, Starred Review, December 2018
Subjects like civil rights, women’s rights, the environment, and the LGBTQ movement have been written about in many youth books, but often in bits and pieces. So kudos to the Push for Social Change series for providing comprehensive looks at how these movements began, progressed, and some cases are faring today. Despite the fact each book has a different author, the series' hallmark is the clarity of the writing and a deep dig into the history, often highlighting personal stories or pieces of history that are lesser known. The Civil Rights Movement, for instance, discusses how during the 1963 March on Washington, Martin Luther King abandoned his original, prepared speech and launched into his now-famous “I Have a Dream” oration off the cuff. The Environmental Movement, begins with the Cuyahoga river catching fire in 1969, due to waste, and extends into twenty-first century concerns, such as climate change. The origins of the gay liberation movement are detailed in The LGTB Rights Movement, spanning Stonewall to marriage equality. Many do not know that in 1917, suffragists experienced what's known as A Night of Terror, when guards beat them while imprisoned, but this and many other eye-opening facts are detailed in The Women's Rights Movement. The images throughout are well chosen, and visually accented time lines helpfully open each volume. Excellent additions to history shelves.
