With comprehensive entries that dig deeper into history than just the facts, the Cause & Effect series—split into subtopics such Modern Wars and Ancient Civilizations—is solidly researched and expertly cited. Modern Wars: The Korean War may be of particular interest now to students and scholars alike. North Korea is a current political concern, and teens may want to know more about the peninsula and its history. Ancient Civilizations: The Ancient Maya is an interesting, highly enjoyable read. Students will learn that the Mayans had the best calendar of any civilization and a love for the sciences. The Mayans were centuries ahead of their time. Knowledge and science were important to them, as they were tied to their religion. Expert craftspeople left behind priceless artifacts in jade and other jewels. Much of the Mayan history that was preserved was lost when the Spaniards invaded and destroyed archives.
Each title is a welcome asset to any reference section. Reluctant readers are helped along by the visual time line at the beginning of each volume. Each chapter includes guided questions to help readers focus on the important points. Modern Wars contains seven titles, while Ancient Civilizations consists of eight. This quality series offers a broad range of topics useful for research projects and reports, as well as browsing.

Gr 9 Up—Each title begins with an introduction to some fundamental aspect or cause of the war, such as oil in Persian Gulf War and the rise of post–World War II tensions in Cold War. A brief history of each conflict is followed by questions about its origins or outbreak, key battles, important political decisions or military strategies, and its impact and lasting effects. Throughout the series the writing is clear, the information presented is well documented, and the content and objective analyses are within mainstream historical scholarship. Series and individual titles about modern wars abound, but this set will assist readers and report writers in understanding the impact and continuing effects.
VERDICT: A strong consideration for teen readers.

Each of the titles in this series follows the same format. At the beginning of each chapter is a box containing three Focus Questions, which may be the most useful component of the entire book. These questions might not necessarily catch students’ eyes at first glance, but they will be very useful to teachers and librarians seeking inquiry-based topics for class discussion, debate, or further research. Aside from this feature, most of the rest of the volumes do not contain much more information than most libraries would already have in their print and electronic collections. These titles are available in both print and eBook formats, including a multi-user eBook edition that costs only $10 more than the single-use edition. Timeline. Index.

This title, part of the Cause & Effect: Modern Wars series, gives students an even-handed history of the war on terror, explaining how it began and continues today, as well as American missteps along the way. Over the course of five chapters, most headed by focus questions, Nardo explains how the 9/11 attacks launched the international campaign to end violent terrorist acts, particularly by al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and ISIS. He helpfully provides historical context for why these organizations formed and how they gained influence, and he candidly addresses how U.S. interference in Iraq is likely to blame for the rise of ISIS. Illuminating quotes and thorough citations result in this being an effective resource on a complex topic that endeavors to promote critical thinking and create informed, engaged citizens.
