This series gives a complete background on each of the stated art disciplines. The books in this series provide the origins of each discipline along with past movers and shakers and those artists that continue to move them forward. Also included are colored photographs, graphics, quotes from the professionals, and hot topics. There are chapters specific to the genre being discussed. For example, Animation includes “New Outlets for Animations;” Comics include “Creating a Following;” and Graffiti dates the art form back to the Stone Age. In addition to providing background, artists of influence, and inspirations, each book also offers a solid picture of how young or aspiring artists can hone their craft and move forward with their skills. For students in grades 7–12, these titles will provide the necessary inspiration to explore and develop their own artistic talents and dreams. I would recommend this series for your Fine Arts collection. It gives students interested in these disciplines the requisite information to develop their own niche in the field of their dreams. From vandalism to legitimate art, this entry in the Art Scene series (6 titles) traces the rise in popularity and credibility of an often overlooked art form: graffiti art. While perhaps aimed at researchers, the comprehensive text, infused with terms of the craft, is also accessible to browsing readers. Beginning with the Stone Age paintings on the Lascaux cave walls, the opening chapter looks at the history of graffiti art, including its roots in gang vandalism in 1960s Philadelphia. Although examples of graffiti artists and images of their works appear throughout, one chapter is dedicated to such influential graffiti artists as Keith Haring, Lady Pink, and Banksy. Additional chapters describe the transformation of graffiti art to celebrated mural movements in U.S. cities and how modern artists use social media to create a following. The final chapter emphasizes graffiti’s role in activism around the world, such as the politically charged messages that adorn each side of the wall separating Israeli and Palestinian territory. Not just for urban settings, this high-interest book is for all art collections.
