Acknowledging nonprofessionals’ limitations, she argues that teens can still have an impact by listening to their friends, urging them to seek care, and simply being there. The second chapter, “Talking and Listening,” explains various types of intervention within teens’ reach and describes training programs that help them learn how to recognize and respond to signs of suicidality in peers. Next, the author covers practical ways to support friends, such as educating oneself and dealing effectively with social media. Recommended Audience: Middle School
Review: This non-fiction book guides students through recognizing when a friend is in crisis, approaching the friend, how to listen to the friend, when they need adult help, as well as how to care for themselves if experiencing Empathy Fatigue. After a repetitive introduction, the chapters in the book are very thorough and respectfully and carefully encourage students to care for each other consistently over time. This book is very well-done and trustworthy.
Verdict: This is a relevant and important book for middle school students.
