Gr 8 Up—While these text-heavy, lyrically written volumes are geared toward capable readers, the writing has a conversational tone rather than a scholarly one and often displays whimsical humor. Rich in entertaining myths, this series teaches readers about various aspects of Norse history, identity, and cultural values. The author frequently quotes from scholars, which lends extra weight to his own deep research. The dramatic illustrations have an old-fashioned look, and maps appear as needed. The books include some nice design elements, including a specific color scheme for each title. Back matter includes source notes; resources for further reading, and an index. VERDICT This impressive series is for mature readers who wish to delve deeply into Norse culture and lore.

STARRED REVIEW Mythology books have long been a staple of nonfiction collections in libraries, and in recent years, these collections have become more inclusive of countries and cultures beyond the borders of the classics: ancient Greece and Rome. As a historian and a writer, Nardo has a wide-ranging knowledge of history and a talent for engaging middle-grade and young adult readers with both historical and mythological stories. In this volume, he presents a series of centuries-old Norse myths, describing the sometimes courageous, sometimes ignoble acts of gods and heroes. At times, he comments on whether certain myths were inspired by people and events in Nordic history; Vikings are mentioned frequently. The illustrations are dramatic paintings, reminiscent of the Romantic movement in European art. This well-researched, very readable volume is one of the five books that Nardo has written for the Discovering Norse Mythology series (5 titles). This book further broadens the availability and enjoyment of mythology books for readers intrigued by dramatic adventure stories in general and Norse myths in particular.
