Gr 9 Up—Well-written examinations of the factors that created, sustained, and eventually destroyed ancient civilizations distinguish this set. The books open with a look at surviving aspects and a brief history of each society, followed by four chapters that ask and answer key questions. Almost all the titles include information about the civilization’s roots, evolution, religious beliefs, military, and its eventual decline or destruction, but the other topics vary, from the transformative impacts of cuneiform writing and Athenian theater to the Silk Road and Aztec human sacrifice. The authors draw on contemporary scholarship and provide background, definitions, and clear analysis. This set provides high school readers and report writers with readable content that will help them to form a deeper understanding of cause and effect.
VERDICT A must for high school students.

This series provides a thoughtful presentation and discussion of causes and consequences in Ancient civilizations. Each book starts with a brief history and presents other topics related to the specific civilizations. Margin quotes, full-color photographs and maps, and a visual chronology are included in the opening of each title. There are also sidebars, discussion questions, and excellent source notes. The eBook versions are searchable and, depending on the library system, available for note taking. The multi-user pricing for the eBooks is listed as $39.95, which seems like an excellent use of library resources. Print or digital, this first-rate series is impressive and would be an excellent addition to a middle or high school library. Additional Resources. Bibliography.
