Immigration, whether legal or illegal, and border control are hot-button topics in the U.S. Cummings gives a concise overview of the current issues tied to the U.S.–Mexico border before launching her in-depth examination of border control and a border wall. Though she presents facts in a nonjudgmental, straightforward manner and offers pro and con arguments for both a physical border wall and enhanced border security, some could argue that her position is biased toward relaxed immigration restrictions. Each of the five chapters features color photographs and inset text boxes to break up the detailed, statistics-rich narrative. The book’s format is easily accessible, with wide borders, amply spaced lines, highlighted quotes, and additional explanations of topics when necessary. Source notes and a detailed bibliography round out this entry in the timely Immigration Issues series (5 titles).

Gr 6 Up —Immigration is certainly a hot political topic, and these five volumes provide a comprehensive overview of its numerous aspects. Readers learn how the United States is one of the few countries that recognizes jus soli (birthright citizenship). The text also explains the history and role of Border Patrol, problems with detaining undocumented immigrants, President Obama’s executive order allowing Dreamers certain rights, and under what circumstances asylum is granted. All titles are generally positive in championing the rights of immigrants. Issues not frequently found elsewhere (such as birthright tourism) are discussed. The information provided is current through 2019.
VERDICT The timely issue of immigration is well explored in these volumes, which should be of use to readers with an interest in the topic and report writers alike.
