The Mental Health Guides series for reluctant readers addresses mental health challenges that can affect young adults. The large fonts and straightforward, informational sentences will also work well with English-language learners. User-friendly features include brief chapters, boxed insets, and multiple graphics (primarily stock photos). Despite different authors, all titles strike a reassuring tone and follow the same format. An introduction lists bulleted facts that provide basic definitions and statistics. A first chapter describes the medical condition, the second explains how the condition affects individuals, the third how the condition affects society, and the final chapter talks about treatment. Each book identifies celebrities who have come forward about their personal struggles. In Understanding ADHD, gymnast Simone Biles shares how she has taken medication for ADHD since she was a young child. Both Caitlyn Jenner and Chas Bono are mentioned in Understanding Gender Dysphoria, although young readers may be less familiar with these individuals. Understanding PTSD reveals Ariana Grande's admission to having PTSD after a bomb exploded during one of her concerts. Lady Gaga is cited in Understanding Suicidal Thoughts, which also includes information about her Born This Way Foundation. A glossary, chapter notes, and lists of recommended readings round things out. The title on gender dysphoria seems a little light, but in general these selections will serve as accessible resources for report writers.

While ReferencePoint Press has staked a claim on reliable nonfiction series for teens, its relatively new imprint, BrightPoint Press, delivers similar content in a high/low format. The Mental Health Guides series (5 titles) addresses topics commonly assigned for health reports in addition to satisfying personal inquiry. Enhanced with large stock photos that feature diverse individuals, larger font, and easier text, each book begins with a bulleted list about the featured mental health condition and a high-interest story about a teen who developed it; a deeper dive into related issues then follows.
Understanding Addiction considers several kinds of addiction, the stages of substance-use disorder, and how addiction affects society. A glossary and list of print and internet resources add to the research value.
Understanding Anxiety describes the impact of anxiety on both individuals and society and several treatment options. A glossary and list of print and internet resources add to the research value.
Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder outlines the differences between obsessions and compulsions, how the two are connected with OCD, and relational disorders (e.g., anxiety or depression). A glossary and list of print and internet resources add to the research value.
Understanding Panic Attacks looks at some of the ways panic attacks manifest themselves in individuals and at different treatment options. Celebrity examples, such as Emma Stone’s manifestation and treatment of panic attacks, teen testimonials, sidebars, and charts will help engage reluctant readers. A glossary and list of print and internet resources add to the research value.
A solid choice for student needs.

Gr 6 Up—These titles offer an in-depth look at mental health issues. Each book begins with a bullet list of important concepts that are explored more fully within the text. Organization is the same in each title; the issue is defined, its impact on the individual and society is explained, then treatment options are discussed. Celebrity examples, such as Demi Lovato’s struggle with bipolar disorder and Emma Stone’s panic attacks, illustrate the pervasiveness of these problems and destigmatize the conditions. Informative sidebars, including records of obsessive-compulsive disorder in ancient times or the difference between use, misuse, and abuse of drugs, provide more details. Source notes and suggestions for further reading support personal research or class assignments. VERDICT Recommended for those updating their collections; a realistic examination of the various subjects.
