Gr 5-9—This truly fantastic series explains general concepts through the lens of COVID-19. Topics include frontline workers, how life has changed during the pandemic, and efforts to develop a vaccine. Readers will gain comprehensive scientific knowledge as well as an Âunderstanding of COVID-19 through each book's topics. For example, readers learn about vaccines in general, how they are developed, and the biochemistry of how they work, all while learning about the COVID-19 vaccine. Because of this foundational learning, these books will be useful long after the pandemic. Color photos, illustrations, and side notes beautifully support the text while still giving the book a research feel. The table of contents, “ a glance” section, index, glossary, source notes, and further research section make these data-filled books easy to use. VERDICT A standout series that should be a must-purchase for every library. Absolutely exceptional.

This entry in the timely COVID-19 Pandemic series (5 titles) looks back at previous pandemics and their relationship to the current coronavirus. Opening “At a Glance” bullet points provide key summary facts for quick reference, while the introduction gives a brief overview of the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a global pandemic. Written in a high/low format with short, simple sentences, the straightforward text is divided into four chapters examining the Black Death, the Spanish flu, AIDS, and the swine flu—their rise and spread, symptoms, and treatment. More interesting are explanations of their similarities and differences with COVID-19. For example, masks and physical distancing were used to help stop the spread of both the Spanish flu and COVID-19. Large photographs and boxed information offer more details and aid comprehension.
