This five volume series weaves the ancient Greek pantheon of gods, demigods, and stories into a highly readable and visually appealing format. To the ancient Greeks, the gods played an important role in their daily lives. Their wrath could be unleashed upon them for numerous transgressions, such as impiety, disrespect for the gods, or disregard for social rules. Most of the Greek myths are models for practical wisdom as well as social, political, or moral values, providing windows into the ancient Greek society and culture. Each volume covers a separate topic in Greek mythology: heroes, villains, classic stories, gods, and goddesses. Each of the books features an introduction about the topic covered in the volume, followed by five chapters expanding on the themes contained in the introduction. Each volume is studded with numerous color photographs and sidebars. At the end of each volume is a list of footnotes for each introduction and chapter, a list of relevant ancient story tellers, the fountainhead for most extant Greek myths, and a section on “For Further Research” with a list of books, internet sources, and websites. This series is appropriate for middle school students, high school students, or anyone wanting a quick overview of Greek mythology and an insight into ancient Greek society. For the high school library, this series could serve as an introduction to such masterpieces about Greek mythology as Edith Hamilton's Mythology or Bulfinch's Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch.
